Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the right to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
